Next Michigan Development Act Introduced in Michigan Senate
The Next Michigan Development Act (NMDA) Legislation was introduced in the Michigan Senate in January, and was referred to the Senate Commerce and Tourism Committee for action. This package of six bills was passed by the Michigan House of Representatives in December 2009 with strong bipartisan support.
The Next Michigan Development Act will provide regional entities like the Aerotropolis Development Corporation (ADC) with powerful tools to attract businesses to our State. More than any other initiative underway in the State of Michigan, the Aerotropolis project has the potential to create tens of thousands of jobs for our citizens and enhance our region’s strategic position in the global economy. Given the continuing struggles of the Michigan economy, we are grateful for the swift action by the Michigan House and hopeful that the Senate will act with comparable speed.
We are grateful for the support of Michigan State Senator Tupac Hunter (D-Detroit) for his Detroit News Editorial in support of the Aerotropolis and the Next Michigan Development Act. This legislation is needed now more than ever, largely due to growing competition from airport developments in Cleveland, Milwaukee, and Indianapolis. We know Detroit has clear advantages over these other airports in terms of capacity and international connectivity, but we cannot afford to fall behind as our region continues to diversify our economy and create new jobs.
We Need Your Support
We need your help to ensure this legislation passes. Because your voice is important, we are asking you to take a moment to fill out the attached letter with your name and send it to your State senator. A full list of senators can be found here.
Please stress the urgency we face - as we debate, other cities across North America are moving forward with aerotropolis developments. We need the NMDA in place to position Michigan competitively in terms of aerotropolis-related business attraction and job creation. We also expect the NMDA to position Michigan as ready to compete for federal transportation infrastructure funding.
Thank you for your continued support of the Detroit Region Aerotropolis.
