The Wayne County Airport Authority is committed to serving the aviation needs of people and businesses of Metro Detroit and around the world. As the focal point of the Aerotropolis project, the Airport Authority values the partnerships that have been made with communities surrounding the airports and with Wayne County. The Authority is proud to offer the services and capacity to fit the needs of passengers and businesses specializing in aviation, air cargo, and trade. With the 2002 opening of the McNamara Terminal and the fall 2008 opening of the North Terminal, Detroit Metropolitan Airport offers a first class gateway to the world. Detroit Metro was rated #1 among U.S. airports its size (25-40 million passengers) in terms of Service Quality by Airports Council International (2007).
National and international aviation accessibility has been pivotal in attracting foreign investment to the Detroit Area. Nearly all of the foreign-owned firms operating in the region have headquarters in nations with non-stop service from Metro Airport. Detroit Metropolitan Airport offers direct service to more than 30 international destinations, and is strategically positioned to benefit from increased trade with Europe and Asia. - In recognition for outstanding achievement in airfield snow and ice control, Detroit Metro Airport received the Colonel Bernt Balchen/Wilfred M. Post Award in 1981 and 1995. Since then DTW received honorable mention in 2001, 2004/05, and 2006/07. Further, DTW has placed a total of 5 times since the inception of the award.

Special Notes
- DTW awarded a Voluntary Airport Low Emissions (VALE) grant, totaling nearly $5.1 million by the FAA to support the airport’s plan to reduce operations emissions at its new North Terminal. North Terminal scheduled to open in September 2008.
- Aircraft Deicing Fluid Recycling – DTW is the largest deicing fluid recycler in the WORLD for 8 out of the last 9 years
- Retrofitted more than 5,000 taxiway edge lights wi8th longer-life and energy efficient LED fixture, these bring a savings of $12 million in operating costs.
- Crosswinds Marsh – 1,000 acre wetland preserve in Sumpter Township that was created to compensate for 300 acres of on-airport wetland disturbed during expansion projects.
Willow Run Airport (YIP)
Willow Run Airport serves cargo, corporate and general aviation clients. Once the region’s primary commercial airport, Willow Run has excellent infrastructure for airports in its class. Willow Run also ranks as one of the largest U.S. airports for landed air freight flown exclusively by cargo aircraft.
